Writing - Part 1 - B1 Preliminary (PET) - Practice, Write & Improve

Exam Question:

Type: Email

From: Nina
Subject: Olivia’s party

Hello Jane,

I’m writing because, as you know, Olivia is leaving our school and moving to Canada. I thought we could organize a surprise party for her. Do you think it’s a good idea? (Great Idea!)

If so, can you think of a good place to have the party? (Suggest …)

Would it be best to have it on a weekday or at the weekend? (Answer…Why?)

Also, I’m thinking of hiring a DJ for the party. Do you know what sort of music Olivia likes best? (Answer)

Email me soon!
Nina

Write your email to Nina using all the notes.

Student's Answer:

“Hey Nina!
As for me your party idea is brilliant, if I were Olivia I would absolutely love it.
My parents have an old house near the lake and they might allow us to use it, which is amazing because it’s a remote location where we can’t be heard.
Since the school year isn’t over yet it’d be better to have the party at the weekend when everybody is free.
I’m not a close friend of hers but I don’t think we need a DJ because it’s not a big deal to manage the music.
Please let me know when we have everything sorted out, and don’t forger to fit me in about details.
I’m looking forward till we can finally put it into effect!

Feedback:

Hey Nina! -  an appropriate opening

Thanks for your email, it is nice to hear from you! - start with a greeting

As for me[,] your party idea is brilliant, if I were (conditionals)  Olivia I would (modal forms) absolutely love it.

Speaking of place, (refer to the questions) my parents have an old house near the lake and (conjunctions) they might allow us to use it, which is amazing (relative pronouns) because it's a remote location (advanced vocabulary) where we can't be heard. (compound sentences)

About the date, (refer to the questions) since the school year isn't over yet it'd be better (contractions) to have the party at the weekend when everybody is free.

Also, (use linking words) I'm not a close friend of hers (possessive) but I don't think we need a DJ because it's not a big deal (informal/colloquial language) to manage the music. Please let me know (friendly tone) when we have everything sorted out,  (phrasal verbs) and don't forget to fit me in about details. (relevant phrases)

Anyway, (use linking words) I'm looking forward (relevant phrases) until we can finally put it into effect! (exclamation marks)

Lots of love, -  add an appropriate closing
Jane
